Seminar on Modernisation of Banking Sector in Myanmar, Nay Pyi Taw, 9-10 July 2012

HE Dr Ahmad Faisal Muhamad, Ambassador of Malaysia in Myanmar attended the seminar on Modernisation of Banking Sector in Myanmar: Drawing from East Asian Experiences, at the Amara Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw on 9-10 July 2012.  The seminar was jointly organised by the Central Bank of Myanmar and an independent think-tank, Myanmar Economic Resources International (MERI).  It was sponsored by Maybank.  The seminar was officiated by HE U Hla Tun, Myanmar’s Minister of Finance and Revenue.  Also present at the opening ceremony were HE U Win Than, Deputy Minister of Finance and Revenue; Mr U Than Nyein, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar and his deputy, Mr U Nay Aye.  Maybank was represented by Mr Abdul Farid Alias, Deputy President and Head of Global Wholesale Banking and also Mr Abdul Malek Mohd Khair, Head of Maybank’s Representative Office in Yangon.  In his opening remarks, HE Ambassador congratulated the Myanmar Central Bank, MERI and Maybank for successfully organising the event.  He considered the seminar to be extremely important and timely in the context of Myanmar’s ongoing political and economic reform.  The seminar was attended by more than 40 officials from the Myanmar Central Bank, government owned banks and local private commercial banks.  Presenters at the seminar included academics, bankers and officials from Malaysia, Singapore and China.
