ASEAN AMBASSADORS TO ESTABLISH ASEAN COMMUNITY IN MUSCAT

The Ambassadors of the ASEAN member states accredited to the Sultanate of Oman (Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines) have agreed to establish the ASEAN Community in Muscat to further promote the interests and identity of ASEAN in the host country, the Sultanate of Oman. Their Excellencies Ambassadors have agreed to name the Committee as the ASEAN Committee in Muscat (ACM).

 

The establishment of the ACM was made based on the Rules of Procedures for the ASEAN Committee in Third Countries and International Organizations adopted at the 43rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Vietnam on 20 July 2010, paragraph 7, states that “In countries with which ASEAN has no formal dialogue relations, an ACTC may be established only after prior approval by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting upon the recommendation of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR). In a third country or international organization where not all ASEAN Member States have diplomatic missions, the establishment of an ACTC must also have prior approval of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting”.

 

To materialised the agreement reached earlier on, Their Excellencies Ambassadors had on 20 June 2012 signed a letter addressed to the Secretary General of ASEAN requesting for his assistance in seeking approval of the ASEAN Member States through the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) for the establishment of the ASEAN Committee in Muscat.

 

The ceremony of the signing of the letter was held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Muscat with the Embassy of Malaysia represented by His Excellency Dato’ Rustam Yahaya. The event was also attended by the spouses of the respective Ambassadors and officers from each Embassies of the ASEAN member states in Oman.

 

The event was hosted by His Excellency  Dr. Pornchai Danvivathana, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Sultanate of Oman.

 

The Embassy of Malaysia looks forward for the establishment of the ASEAN Community in Muscat and looks forward for the augmentation of the friendship and solidarity among the people of ASEAN countries in Oman to help the achievement of the ASEAN Community by 2015.
