On 9 January 2020, H.E. Ambassador Datuk Mat Dris Haji Yaacob has completed his tour of duty as Malaysia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Russian Federation and simultaneously retire from the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Service.
H.E. Ambassador’s assignment in Moscow caps off a long and successful career with the Malaysian foreign service, spanning 36 years to date. Datuk Mat Dris Haji Yaacob joined the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Service on 1 July 1983 upon graduating from the University of Malaysia.
Over the years, H.E. Ambassador has built an illustrious career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and had served in a number of key substantive and operational positions. It was while serving in human resources planning and management services that H.E. Ambassador’s forte was discovered and on which he has since built a sterling reputation as a tough but fair boss.
Prior to Moscow, H.E. Ambassador’s His diplomatic postings abroad include stints at Malaysian Missions in Tripoli (Libya), Muscat (Oman), as Consul-General in Vancouver (Canada) and ambassadorial postings in Damascus (Syria) and Pretoria (South Africa), and at present, Moscow (Russian Federation).
Over a relatively short but impactful two years in Moscow, H.E. Ambassador presided over rapid and tremendous improvement and development of bilateral relations between Malaysia and the Russian Federation.
Among the major highlights of H.E. Ambassador’s tenure in Moscow include the successful visits to Russia by YAB Prime Minister, YB Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Minister of Economic Affairs and YB Minister of Defence.
