ASEAN + 3 CONCERT FOR HM THE KING

22 MAY 2009

A special ASEAN + 3 Concert to commemorate HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60th coronation anniversary was successfully organised by Radio Thailand at the majestic Thailand Cultural Centre on 22 May 2009. The concert was also held in honour of HM The King’s avid interest in music where HM The King has been long recognised as a ‘Musician King’.

2.         A total of 14 singers representing all ASEAN + 3 countries participated in the concert. The heavy downpour in the late afternoon and the snarling traffic did not dampen the spirit and stop the enthusiast music lovers from thronging the venue. The Embassy of Malaysia itself was represented by 14 of its staff including TYT Dato’ Husni Zai and spouse to lend their support to the Malaysian singer who participated in the concert.

3.         Malaysia was represented by Mr. Reynaldo Pagi or whose stage name is Rey in the concert. Rey, who hails from Sabah is the winner of Bintang RTM 2007 edition. Despite being a novice in the industry, the highly entertaining singer with a deep and powerful vocal did not disappoint the audience with his rendition of the legendary Ramli Sarip’s Temasya Desa Gemalai and Queen’s I Want To Break Free, much to the awe of the audience. It is not surprising, therefore, that other than winning local competition, he had also won a gold medal in the ASEAN Golden Melodies competition held in Hanoi end of last year.

4.         Judging from the success of the event, perhaps, a greater collaboration with RTM could be held in the future vis-à-vis music and entertainment as one of the tools in fostering closer bilateral cooperation with the host country.
