INTERVENTION BY

MR. ANG CHENG LIANG

LONG-TERM DELEGATE TO THE 77TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT THE INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE SESSION WITH

MR. SANJAY WIJESEKERA

DIRECTOR OF THE PROGRAMME GROUP, UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN’S FUND (UNICEF)

7 OCTOBER 2022, NEW YORK

Mr. Chair,

Since 1954, Malaysia has longstanding collaborative partnership with UNICEF. Malaysia commends the extensive work of UNICEF in improving children’s health, nutrition, education and protection as well as welfare services, especially those at the most disadvantaged through different arrays of technical supports and expertise.

Mr. Chair,

2.       The COVID-19 restrictions had prompted UNICEF, Parenting for Lifelong Health International and National Population and Family Development Board to come up with ParentText Chatbot App to provide positive parenting tips and supports for maintaining parent-child relationship that are free from violence.

3.       In collaboration with UNICEF, Malaysia intends to incorporate aspects of children’s right in the digital environment into the comprehensive National Policy on Children and accompanying Action Plan that is currently at the final formulation stage.

4.       Concerning data on children with disabilities, its unavailability may prove difficult for the Government to assess whether existing interventions are positively impacting the lives of children with disabilities. My question for Ms. Sanjay is: in UNICEF’s experience, what are some recommended promising practices that could be adopted to further strengthen data collection in relation to child with disabilities? Are there any existing data collection tools that UNICEF may be able to offer to Member States?

I thank you Mr. Chair.
