PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT THE

BRIEIFING BY THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF CUBA TO THE NAM ON THE  CURRENT SITUATION IN CUBA

26 MAY 2026

Mr. Chair,

1. Malaysia thanks His Excellency Mr. Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, Minister of Foreign  Affairs of Cuba for his briefing on the grave situation facing the Cuban people.

2. Malaysia expresses its solidarity with the Government and people of Cuba. We are  deeply concerned by the further tightening of the economic, commercial and financial  blockade, including recent measures imposing a fuel blockade, and subsequent  measures expanding sanctions and secondary measures against Cuba.

3. Malaysia is particularly concerned by the humanitarian impact of these measures,  including on energy access, food security, healthcare, transport and the daily welfare of  ordinary Cubans. Recent reports of blackouts, fuel shortages and interrupted  humanitarian assistance shipments to Havana underscore the severity of the situation.

4. Malaysia has been and will continue to be among the countries that strongly  opposes the imposition of unilateral coercive measures against any country. We view  these measures as contrary to international law, international humanitarian law, the UN  Charter and the norms and principles of peaceful relations among States. Such measures  are especially troubling when they have extraterritorial effects and impede the legitimate  trade, financial and humanitarian relations of the targeted and third countries.

5. As a member of NAM, Malaysia reaffirms our longstanding support for the  immediate, complete and unconditional lifting of the blockade against Cuba, in line with  the relevant General Assembly resolution on the necessity of ending the economic,  commercial and financial embargo against Cuba.

6. Malaysia will continue to work together with all NAM members to uphold  multilateralism and defend the principles of the UN Charter.

I thank you.
