STATEMENT BY

PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

MEETING OF THE GROUP OF FRIENDS OF GLOBAL GOVERNANCE

Thank you, Chair.

1. Malaysia wishes to thank the People’s Republic of China for convening this meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance ad we appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the discussion.

2. At a time of intersecting crises, Malaysia reaffirms that dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect remain indispensable pillars of effective multilateralism. Malaysia’s approach to global governance is firmly guided by our longstanding commitment to the principles of sovereign equality, peaceful coexistence, non-interference, and the peaceful settlement of disputes – in accordance with international law.

Mr. Chair,

3. Malaysia recalls the important understanding reached with China under our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

4. That understanding reaffirmed our shared commitment to upholding the international system with the United Nations at its core – an international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

5. Malaysia believes that such understandings, when anchored in these foundations serve not only the interests of the parties concerned, but contribute meaningfully to the broader cause of multilateralism and a rules-based international order for all nations.

6. Malaysia supports greater international cooperation in addressing shared global challenges, including sustainable development, climate change, food and energy security, digital transformation, and the governance of emerging technologies.

7. These remain priority areas in Malaysia’s international engagement and regional cooperation efforts.

8. Malaysia welcomes the nine-point proposal as presented by His Excellency Wang Yi in his statement, which aligns with Malaysia’s multilateral priorities at the UN. We particularly commend its emphasis on strengthening multilateralism, upholding the central role of the United Nations, promoting solidarity and cooperation, and enhancing the representation and voice of developing countries in global governance processes.

9. Moving forward, Malaysia remains committed to playing a constructive and pragmatic role, within this Group and in broader multilateral processes.
