STATEMENT BY

G77 AMBASSADORIAL-LEVEL MEETING WITH UNRWA

Madam Chair,

1. Thank you for convening this meeting and for the opportunity to hear from the Commissioner-General ad interim.

2. I also thank Mr. Saunders for his briefing and updates.

3. Malaysia commends the exceptional and indispensable work of UNRWA in alleviating the plight of millions of Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria despite the immense challenges it continue to face. UNRWA’s role in providing education, health care, relief and social services, emergency assistance and protection remains vital and irreplaceable.

4. Let me also express our continuous support for UNRWA and the Commissioner-General ad interim, in carrying out its mandate.

5. Rest assured of Malaysia’s support for UNRWA morally, politically and financially, to add on to our strong support over the years.

6. Let me also pay tribute to the UNRWA staff who has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in Gaza and elsewhere.

7. I end by adding Malaysia’s voice in the call for sustained, predictable, and sufficient support to UNRWA, and reiterates our unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people.
