ON VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN

Mr. Chair,
I wish to thank the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid for her presentation.
2. At the national level, Malaysia has strong legal frameworks to combat violence against children, including sexual violence along with adequate social protection for children. There is also a dedicated law enforcement unit for investigating such crimes. These legislations address several main areas namely child pornography, sexual grooming, physical and non-physical sexual assaults and abuse of position of trust, as well as widened definition of sexual abuse in Malaysian laws.
3. We need to strengthen our resolve to do all we can to end all forms of violence, abuse and exploitation of children. Violence against children is one of the most serious forms of adverse childhood experiences. There is an urgent need for international partnership to further address the root causes of violence against children and for mechanisms to be put in place to stop and prevent violence against children.

In your experience of having close engagement with Member States and Country Missions that adopt a whole of government approach ~ what are the best practices deployed in creating greater understanding and coordination of the varying roles of various agencies, such as health, welfare, education and justice in strengthening prevention and response to violence against children?
