INTERVENTION BY
H.E. DATO’ AHMAD FAISAL MUHAMAD
PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
AT THE BRIEFING BY H.E. DENNIS FRANCIS, PRESIDENT OF THE 78TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
ON HIS PRIORITIES FOR 2024
15 JANUARY 2024, NEW YORK
Mr. President,
Malaysia aligns itself with the statement of G77 and China, delivered by Cuba. At the outset, Malaysia would like to thank you Mr. President for convening this briefing, and for outlining your priorities for the resumed part of the 78th Session of the General Assembly. We support your ambitious programme and look forward to collaborating closely with your Office in its implementation. We also support your goal to strengthen multilateralism by re-dedicating ourselves to rebuilding trust and reigniting meaningful global solidarity. We agree that we must accelerate action towards attaining sustainable development, and continue to strive for Peace, Prosperity and Progress for all.
Malaysia concurs that multilateralism will face even bigger challenges this year, especially in the maintenance of international peace and security. And we agree with you that peace must be the only way. As long-standing conflicts such as the one in the Middle East continue to escalate, the world is looking at the UN to play its role in finding swift, just and durable solutions. While we are preparing to convene the important Summit of the Future, we must ask ourselves, what kind of future do the children of Gaza deserve and how long more do the Palestinians have to wait before their dream of self-determination in a free and independent state of Palestine be realised?
Mr. President,
The United Nations and its bodies play extremely crucial roles in the maintenance of global peace and security, as well as the wellbeing of people around the world. Malaysia reiterates its support to the UN and your presidency of the General Assembly, guided by the relevant mandates and the Charter of the United Nations.
I thank you.
