STATEMENT BY

MS. NATASYA BINTI NAZAR,REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO THE SIXTH COMMITTEE OF THE 80TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

ON AGENDA ITEM 172: OBSERVER STATUS FOR THE ISLAMIC ORGANIZATION FOR FOOD SECURITY IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK, 15 OCTOBER 2025

Mr. Chair,

1. Malaysia notes the Islamic Organization for Food Security (“IOFS”) is a specialized  institution of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (“OIC”), as defined by Article 24 of  the OIC Charter and enjoys the status of a fully-fledged legal entity as an international  organisation, using its full legal capacity to exercise its functions and fulfill its objectives  as defined in the Statute of the IOFS (“the Statute”). The Statute entered into force on 19  February 2018, and since then has grown to currently include forty-one member States  and one observer country.

2. Malaysia further notes that amongst the objectives of the establishment of the IOFS  is to enhance sustainable food security across OIC member States by fostering  socioeconomic development and promoting targeted programmes in agriculture, science  and technology, humanitarian aid and food trade.

3. In this regard, Malaysia recognises the IOFS active collaboration with the United  Nations bodies which aligns with the principle underlined in the UN Charter, that is, to  maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations,  international cooperation on economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character,  encourage respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without  distinction as to race, sex, language or religion.

4. Based on the foregoing, Malaysia recognises that the work of the IOFS is directly  relevant to the interests of the General Assembly, consistent with the principles enshrined  in the Charter of the United Nations. In this regard, Malaysia supports the participation of

the IOFS in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of an  observer.

Thank you.
