STATEMENT BY

MS. SHARIFAH NORA BINTI OTHMAN REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO THE
SIXTH COMMITTEE OF THE 80TH SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
ON AGENDA ITEM 171: OBSERVER STATUS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR INTEGRATED MOUNTAIN DEVELOPMENT IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK, 15 OCTOBER 2025

Mr. Chair,

1. Malaysia notes that the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development  (“ICIMOD”) is the leading intergovernmental knowledge and learning centre working on  behalf of the people of the Hindu Kush Himalaya. Malaysia further notes that the  objectives and activities of ICIMOD in supporting the implementation of several United  Nations global environmental conventions and the global environmental agenda cover  matters of interest to the General Assembly, particularly the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable  Development Goals and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change  (UNFCCC).

2. Taking into consideration the continued efforts of ICIMOD in supporting projects and  programmes in numerous areas, inter alia, climate change and environmental risks,  resilient economies and landscapes, and the Mountain Environment Regional Information  System, which cover matters of interest to the General Assembly, Malaysia has no  objection to ICIMOD’s participation in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly  in the capacity of an observer, notwithstanding that Malaysia is not part of the Hindu Kush  Himalaya region.

Thank you.
