PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT THE BRIEFING BY THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL

ON HIS PRIORITIES FOR 2024

 7 FEBRUARY 2024

President,

My delegation would like to thank the Secretary-General for presenting his priorities for 2024. We align ourselves with the statement delivered by Uganda on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

2.       The challenges facing our world demand a unified as well as a resolute response, and we commend the Secretary General’s commitment to addressing these challenges. We have heard, loud and clear, the aspiration and the visionary priorities set out by the Secretary-General for this year. We share the same concern on the regression of achievements for the Sustainable Development Goals. We desire the same outcome and that is for long and lasting peace. The human toll of conflicts is immeasurable, and the time for decisive action is now.

3.       To this end, Malaysia reiterates our commitment to contribute constructively to the Summit of the Future. The Summit is an important opportunity to reinvigorate multilateralism and strengthen global governance, as well as to tackle the global issues of our time. As the Secretary-General rightly pointed out, this include the need for reform of the international financial architecture, bridging the digital divide and finding just and lasting peace in regions plagued by conflicts. It is essential that our efforts translate into concrete changes on the ground, and this should be reflected in the Pact for the Future.

President,

4.       Rest assured, Malaysia stands ready to contribute and collaborate towards this endeavour.

Thank you.
