STATEMENT BY COL SHAMSURI NOORDIN
MILITARY ADVISER
PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS
AT THE
INFORMAL TCC MEETING ON THE SITUATION IN UNIFIL
1 APRIL 2026
Mr. Chair.
Thank you for convening this important meeting.
2.Malaysia has always been a strong supporter of UN peace operations. Since 1960, Malaysia has participatedin more than 38 peacekeeping operations and deployed approximately 40,000 peacekeepers from the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP). Our largest contingent is currently serving in southern Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate. Malaysia currently deploys511 personnel under MALBATT, alongside 21 personnel from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
3.Malaysia extends its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the families of the three Indonesian peacekeepers who lost their lives in the recent attacks on UNIFIL. We also wish those injured a full and swift recovery. Malaysia calls on all parties to fully uphold their obligations under international law and to ensure that the safety and security of United Nations peacekeepers are not compromised.
4.In this regard, Malaysia strongly condemns the recent attacks on UNIFIL peacekeepers and calls for their immediate cessation. We reiterate our firm stance against these ongoing indiscriminate attacks targeting UN personnel and innocent civilian populations, which constitute a grave violation of international law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. These deplorable actions against UNIFIL are an attack on the United Nations, the Security Council, and the sanctity of the UN Charter. Those responsible must be held accountable.
5.In conclusion, Malaysia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to United Nations peacekeeping efforts and will continue to adhere to UNIFIL’s guidance and decisions, with full confidence that these are undertaken with the safety and security of peacekeepers as the foremost priority. We pay tribute to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of peace worldwide. Malaysia stands ready to continue working closely with all partners to strengthen our collective commitment to international peace and security and remains steadfast in its dedication to this noble endeavour.
