STATEMENT

INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE ON THE PACT FOR THE FUTURE AND THE UN80 INITIATIVE FROM COMMITMENTS TO DELIVERY

Madam President, Mr. Secretary-General, Excellencies

1. Malaysia thanks the President of the General Assembly for convening this timely dialogue on advancing the Pact for the Future and the UN80 Initiative.

2. As we reach the Organisation’s 80th anniversary, our collective priority must be clear: to translate commitments into credible, measurable delivery. The relevance of the United Nations will ultimately be judged not by the breadth of its agendas, but by the impact of its actions on the ground—particularly for developing countries. In this regard, Malaysia wishes to highlight three priorities.

3. First, delivery on sustainable development commitments must be accelerated. The persistent financing gap remains a central obstacle. We call for concrete progress in reforming the international financial architecture, including improved access to concessional financing, meaningful debt relief, and a stronger voice for developing countries in global economic governance. Without this, implementation of the 2030 Agenda will remain uneven.

4. Second, digital transformation must be inclusive and equitable. While the Pact for the Future rightly highlights digital cooperation, bridging the digital divide requires more than principles. It requires capacity-building, technology transfer, and fair access to digital infrastructure. Developing countries must be empowered as active participants—not passive recipients—in shaping the digital future.

5. Third, the credibility of multilateralism depends on the consistent application of international law and the principles of the UN Charter. In this context, the Pact underscores the importance of a Member State-driven and inclusive approach, ensuring that reform efforts reflect the diversity of perspectives across the membership and uphold the legitimacy of the system. Building on this foundation, the UN80 Initiative should further strengthen transparency, accountability, and inclusivity across all pillars of the UN’s work.

6. In closing, Malaysia wishes to emphasise that in an increasingly complex and fragmented international environment, incremental adjustments will not suffice. What is required is sustained political will, strengthened multilateral cooperation, and a genuine commitment to shared responsibility.

7. Malaysia stands ready to engage constructively with all partners to ensure that both the Pact for the Future and the UN80 Initiative deliver tangible outcomes for all.
