MINISTERIAL MEETING OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA

THEME: “ADDRESSING FINANCING CHALLENGES TO SUPPORT THE FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ACHIEVEMENT OF ITS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS FOR LEAVING NO ONE OR COUNTRY BEHIND”

Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
At the outset, Malaysia records our appreciation to Uganda for convening this important meeting. Malaysia also commends Uganda for its effective leadership as the Chair of the Group of 77 and China.
Excellencies,
2. The theme for today’s meeting - “Addressing financing challenges to support the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and achievement of its sustainable development goals for leaving no one or country behind”, resonates profoundly with Malaysia. It is a call to action, a reminder that our shared future depends on the decisions we make together, as developing countries.

3. Economic inequalities continue to persist, particularly among developing nations struggling for accessible financing. The widening gap between the developed and developing countries undermines social reforms and obstructs progress towards sustainable development. Moreover, geopolitical tensions further exacerbate divides, making consensus elusive.
4. Addressing these interconnected problems requires a coordinated and multidimensional approach, leading to comprehensive solutions.
5. At the heart of our response must be the reform of the international financial architecture and need for accessible financing to better support the aspirations of all nations, especially of the developing nations.
6. Malaysia calls for a financial system that prioritises inclusivity and sustainability. This includes the adoption of new financial instruments that are tailored to the needs of developing and least developed countries. Financing for sustainable development, particularly in critical areas such as climate action, healthcare, digitalisation and green infrastructure, must be prioritised to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
7. As a developing nation, we understand the unique challenges that many of our fellow member countries face. These challenges - whether they be in eradicating poverty, addressing climate change, or ensuring equitable access to technology - require a united front, a commitment to collaboration, and a resolve to implement strategies that benefit all, while leaving no one behind.
8. In this regard, Malaysia’s priorities are fully aligned with those of the developing world. We believe that sustainable development must be pursued with a holistic approach, integrating economic, social, and environmental dimensions. At home, Malaysia’s MADANI Economy Framework strongly reflects this commitment.

9. As we look ahead, Malaysia strongly supports the implementation of the outcomes of the Summit of the Future. The summit offers a unique opportunity to reaffirm our collective commitment to multilateralism, accelerate the implementation of SDGs, strengthen global governance, and ensure that the voices of developing countries are heard and acted upon, in shaping the future of our world.

10. In conclusion, allow me to reiterate Malaysia’s commitment to working with members of the Group of 77 and China, in our pursuit to achieve the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs. Malaysia stands ready to collaborate, innovate and cooperate towards our shared vision and goals.
