INTERVENTION BY

COL SHAMSURI NOORDIN

MILITARY ADVISER

PERMANENT MISSION OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT UNIFIL INFORMAL TCC BRIEFING

NEW YORK

25 MARCH 2026

Thank you for giving me the floor.

1.We appreciate Mr Lacroix, the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations and Major General Diodato Abagnara, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, for their informative and comprehensive briefings and efforts in maintaining the good work of the UN peacekeeping operations.

2.The safety and security of UN peacekeeping troops deployed in conflict zones is paramount.  As such, Malaysia strongly condemns the recent attacks on UNIFIL peacekeepers and calls for an immediate stop to these attacks. We want to reiterate our strong stance against these continuing indiscriminate attacks, targeting UN personnel and innocent civilian populations, which are a grave violation of international law.  These deplorable actions against UNIFIL are an attack against the UN and the sanctity of the UN Charter.

3.Malaysia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to United Nations peacekeeping efforts and will continue to adhere to UNIFIL’s guidance and decisions, with full confidence that they are undertaken with the safety and security of peacekeepers as the foremost priority. We underscore the importance of sustained engagement and regular briefings from the Department of Peace Operations, and support continued close consultations with troop-contributing countries.

4.We have two questions regarding operations and operational support.

First, regarding operations, could you elaborate on your operational priorities for addressing the current challenges, particularly in light of reduced troop capacity resulting from the liquidity-crisis contingency measures?

Second, regarding operational support, could you provide insights into the sustainability of operations, particularly regarding maintaining troop readiness under these constraints?

Thank you.
