PRETORIA, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 - Imam Ebrahim Atasoy and Mr. Mustafa Sahin of Nizamiye Mosque paid a courtesy call to the High Commissioner of Malaysia at his office this morning. The call was also attended by Mr. Zahairi Baharim, Deputy High Commissioner. The imam and officials of the mosque are among ‘Friends of Malaysia’ and has been in close relations with the High Commission.
Nizamiye Mosque is located in Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the largest mosque in the Southern hemisphere, occupying 10 hectares of land. The mosque is in fact, a smaller replica of the Selimiye Camii mosque in Edirne, Turkey, completed in the 1570s and now a World Heritage Site. Construction of Nizamiye Mosque began in October 2009 and was completed in 2012. The mosque is steadily becoming a tourist attraction with visitors flocking to take a closer look at its elegant style typical of the Ottoman Empire. The mosque, school, clinic and shops on the massive project is the brain child of Mr. Ali Katircioglu, a prominent Turkish businessman.
