PRETORIA, Tuesday, 30 December 2014 - Northern and Eastern states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perak and Perlis in Malay Peninsula of Malaysia were hit by the deadliest regional flood season in a decade. Due to the magnitude of the floods, most districts especially in Kelantan and Terengganu States were completely inundated. Getting individuals and companies to donate food and other supplies was the “easiest” part, however, the trouble is to find and rescue the displaced and working out which area was the worst affected magnified when communications systems were down.
The High Commission had received several enquiries from the general public in South Africa on how to channel their personal donation to the flood victims in Malaysia. While the Malaysian government coordinated the rescue and relief efforts, locals had also generously donated supplies and necessities for flood victims. Simultaneously, Malaysian private agencies, NGOs and independent individuals are active to offer assistance and iniated the relief funds. Contribution from the private sectors and the general public could be channelled to the flood victims through among other agencies / NGOs as follows:
