History

Bilateral relations between Malaysia and the Republic of Zimbabwe have been warm and cordial. The relations were further manifested by the establishment of the High Commission of Malaysia in Harare in 1988 and the High Commission of Zimbabwe in Kuala Lumpur in 1991.

The ties have been augmented through close cooperation at international fora, such as the United Nations (UN), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and other international organisations. Cooperation between the two countries has encompassed trade, education, tourism, and capacity-building efforts under the ambit of the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP). To date, 388 Zimbabwe officials have benefited from the MTCP course since its establishment in 1980.

The total trade between Malaysia and Zimbabwe is worth USD 8.542 million in 2024, an increase of 16.8 percent compared to USD 7.313 million in 2023. Malaysia’s exports to Zimbabwe increased by 47.2% to USD 6.341 million, while imports stood at USD 22.01 million. The main components of trade are agricultural goods such as palm oil and palm oil vegetables, manufactured goods such as chemicals and chemical products, processed food, and rubber products.
