18/09: CGM, in collaboration with the Malaysian Association in BC (MABC), the BC Malaysia Muslim Association (BCMMA), and the Seri Malaysia Club University of BC (SMC UBC), successfully organized Heritage Alive: Celebrating Malaysia’s UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
The showcase featured a vibrant line-up of Malaysia’s cultural treasures recognized by UNESCO, including Pantun, Songket, Kebaya, Silat, Mek Mulung and Malaysia’s beloved Breakfast Culture., with the additional of Sarawak traditional dance. To bring the experience to life, the evening was set against the backdrop of a traditional Malay mock wedding, allowing guests to witness how these cultural elements are woven into community celebrations.
The event was honoured by the presence of the Guest of Honour, the Honourable Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport of British Columbia. In her speech, Minister Kang highlighted the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening people-to-people ties and deepening mutual understanding. She also took part in the Merenjis ceremony, a symbolic blessing traditionally performed for the bride and groom, adding a special touch to the evening’s celebration.
The success of the event was made possible through the generous support of sponsors and partners: Power of Three, who provided the wedding dais and emcee services; Vancouver Wedding Studio, for photography; Banana Leaf Restaurant and PERWAKILAN Vancouver, who curated authentic Malaysian cuisine; SMC UBC for the Kompang, Silat and performances and Frobisher International, who contributed bird’s nest beverages.
