Consul General, Mr. Mohd Shahafeez Shaharis officiated the Opening Ceremony of the Malaysia Food & Culture Festival on 30 May 2026 at Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai.

Jointly organized by the Consulate General of Malaysia, Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MayCham) Shanghai, the 4th edition of the festival was held in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026. The event was attended by representatives from the Foreign Affairs Offices (FAO) of Anhui and Jiangsu, as well as members of the diplomatic corps from various Consulates General in Shanghai.

Under the theme “Malaysia’s Breakfast Culture”, the event aimed to showcase Malaysia’s breakfast tradition, which was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024. The breakfast culture is more than food. It reflects the social practice of communal dining at hawker stalls and restaurants among Malaysia’s multiracial communities.

In his speech, the Consul General invited Chinese and international guests to visit Malaysia for its uniqueness, celebrated gastronomy, rich history and culture as well as picturesque natural landscapes.

In keeping with the theme, the Opening Ceremony featured live teh tarik and roti canai demonstrations by renowned Malaysian chef based in Shanghai, Chef Shah. The programme also included the official Visit Malaysia 2026 promotional video and traditional Malaysian cultural dance performances, including joget lambak, in which members of the audience participated.

Guests had the opportunity to sample Malaysia’s breakfast specialties such as nasi lemak, roti canai and teh tarik, and to visit various Malaysian booths. These included the Consulate’s ladies’ association (PERWAKILAN) booth, which offered authentic Malaysian cuisine and handicrafts.
