PETALING JAYA: Malaysians who are travelling abroad, especially to countries that are on high alert following terrorist attacks, are urged to notify and seek advice from Wisma Putra before flying off.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman (pix) said while the government does not prevent anyone from travelling, it is best that they inform the Ministry of their travel in case of any unwanted incidences.
"So far, there are no statement or directive to prevent Malaysians from flying abroad, be it the United Kingdom or any other other countries. But do come to us for advice, we are always ready to provide you with whatever information.
"In fact, from before, we have been urging Malaysians to at least inform our embassy of their travel. So if anything happens, we can at least identify our people there and would know who to contact and what not," he told theSun today.
Anifah was commenting on the recent suspected terrorist attacks in Manchester and London, England, that killed at least 30 people in total, and wound scores others, and similar attacks in Manila and and Mindanao, Philippine that killed over 100 civilians.
Deputy Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, when contacted, said at the moment the government does not plan to stop travellers from flying abroad, but urged them to be extra cautious during their travel.
"The Hari Raya celebration is so close, I'm sure many Malaysians have booked their flights to travel abroad. We won't stop them. I just ask that Malaysians seek advice from Wisma Putra," she said.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president Datuk Hamzah Rahmat said he has yet to receive any reports from member agencies of Malaysians cancelling their travel plans following the London attack on June 4.
In claiming that terror attacks are unpredictable and could happen anywhere in the world, he advised travelers to be more alert during their travel.
"This is not the first time (terrorist attack). It has been happening for the past few years. So just be extra alert and safe," he said.
