Malaysia Strengthens Diaspora Bonds through Ramadan Diplomacy in Berlin
Embassy engagement highlights cultural diplomacy and diaspora cohesion
March 19th, 2026In February and March 2026, the Embassy of Malaysia in Berlin advanced its cultural diplomacy agenda through a series of Ramadan-themed engagements that brought together the Malaysian diaspora and local partners in Germany. In collaboration with PERWAKILAN Berlin, the Embassy organised two Malaysian Ramadan Bazaars at its Chancery on 20 February and 13 March 2026, followed by a community Iftar on 27 February 2026. These initiatives served not only as platforms for cultural expression and religious observance but also as instruments of soft power, reinforcing Malaysia’s presence within Germany’s multicultural landscape while strengthening ties with its citizens abroad.
The Malaysian Ramadan Bazaars showcased a wide array of traditional dishes and delicacies associated with the holy month, creating an immersive cultural experience for attendees. By opening these events to both Malaysians and friends of Malaysia, the Embassy effectively extended its outreach beyond the diaspora, positioning Malaysian cuisine and traditions as accessible and appealing elements of cultural exchange. This aligns with broader public diplomacy objectives, wherein food and shared cultural practices act as informal yet impactful channels for fostering mutual understanding. Within the context of Malaysia–Germany bilateral relations, such initiatives complement formal diplomatic engagements by cultivating people-to-people connections that underpin long-term cooperation.
The Iftar gathering hosted at the Chancery on 27 February 2026 further reinforced these objectives by providing a structured yet intimate setting for community engagement. The programme, which included the breaking of fast as well as Maghrib, Isha’, and Tarawih prayers followed by ‘moreh’, underscored the Embassy’s role not only as a diplomatic mission but also as a cultural and social anchor for Malaysians residing in Germany. By facilitating religious observance in a communal environment, the Embassy contributed to sustaining cultural identity among the diaspora, an important dimension of diaspora diplomacy. At the same time, such gatherings offer opportunities for informal dialogue, networking, and the strengthening of intra-community cohesion, which can translate into more coordinated engagement with host-country institutions.
From a strategic perspective, these Ramadan initiatives reflect a deliberate effort by the Embassy of Malaysia in Berlin to integrate cultural diplomacy into its broader foreign policy toolkit. Engaging the diaspora enhances Malaysia’s capacity to project a positive national image while leveraging its overseas communities as cultural ambassadors. Furthermore, by situating these activities within Germany, a key economic partner within the European Union, the Embassy contributes to a conducive environment for bilateral cooperation, including in trade, tourism, and education. Cultural familiarity and goodwill generated through such events can indirectly support economic diplomacy by increasing interest in Malaysian products, services, and investment opportunities.
In the longer term, the sustained organisation of culturally significant events such as Ramadan bazaars and communal Iftars demonstrates the Embassy’s commitment to building resilient, trust-based relationships both within the Malaysian diaspora and with the wider German public. These efforts align with contemporary diplomatic practices that emphasise inclusivity, cultural exchange, and grassroots engagement as complements to state-level interactions. As Malaysia continues to navigate an increasingly interconnected global environment, initiatives of this nature are likely to remain integral to strengthening its international partnerships and enhancing its soft power projection.
