H.E. Nor' Azam Mohd Idrus, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Fiji ("TYT"), attended the Europe Day 2026 reception hosted by European Union in the Pacific on 7 May 2026 at Novotel Lami. TYT joined Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, members of the diplomatic corps, government representatives, development partners, and regional stakeholders. The event marked the 76th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which helped transform post-war Europe through cooperation and dialogue, laying the foundation for the European Union. In the welcome address by H.E. Barbara Plinkert, Ambassador of the European Union to the Pacific, she said that, “the European Union has… delivered peace, stability, and prosperity on (the European) continent for more than half a century.” Conversations during the evening touched on upholding international law and a rules-based order amid global challenges, including geopolitical tensions, conflict, climate change, and economic uncertainty. Guests also spoke about ongoing opportunities in trade, renewable energy, digital connectivity, marine conservation, disaster preparedness, and women and youth empowerment. The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement (BBNJ) was noted as a significant example of joint commitment in protecting the world's common resources of future generations. Malaysia, having signed the BBNJ Agreement in 2025, reaffirms its commitment to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity, in line with UNCLOS and Sustainable Development Goal 14. TYT moved warmly among guests, connecting his exchanges to engagements to promote peace stability, and prosperity for all. The evening was further enlivened by cultural showcases, European cuisine, and music by the Fiji Police Band, celebrating the people-to-people connections that promote peace stability, and prosperity for all.
