It was an enlightening experience attending the symposium bringing together diplomats, Pacific academics, and civil society, moderated by Dr. Lorenz Gonschor, Senior Lecturer at The University of the South Pacific, on 6 May 2026. The symposium explored topical issues, including multilateralism, democratic governance, rule of law, climate change, media freedom, and civil society's role in promoting accountability and resilience. The discussions highlighted how countries can work together to ensure diverse perspectives from across the globe remain heard in international forums on global governance, sustainable development, and human security. Speakers also emphasized the importance of dialogue, institutional strength, and inclusive participation in building stable and prosperous societies. Views were exchanged with diplomats, academics, and civil society representatives on regional developments and constructive cooperation in addressing shared challenges. Among them was Barbara Gonzenbach, Swiss Pacific Envoy. In May 2025, both H.E. Nor’ Azam Mohd Idrus, High Commissioner of Malaysia, and H.E. Gonzenbach presented credentials to the President of Kiribati. In informal chats, there were also reflections on the meaningful contribution of Kuik Cheng-Chwee, Professor at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia - UKM, during the Pacific Dialogue hosted by the University of the South Pacific in December 2025. Professor Dr. Kuik’s engagement and thoughtful insights greatly enriched discussions, demonstrating the valuable role Malaysian academics can play in international discourse. Malaysia values platforms that connect diplomacy, academia, and civil society. Such engagements strengthen understanding, encourage exchange of ideas, and contribute to promote peace, stability, and prosperity through dialogue and cooperation.
