MALAYSIAN CULTURAL EVENING
OF FOOD & BATIK FASHION SHOW IN PARIS
A Malaysian Cultural Evening showcasing Malaysian cuisine and batik was held at the Paris City Hall of the 16th District on Tuesday, 20 November 2007.
2. The event was co-hosted by H.E. Dato? S. Thanarajasingam, the Malaysian Ambassador to France and Mr. Pierre-Christian Taittinger, Mayor of the 16th District, where the Embassy and the Rumah Malaysia is located.

Invitees to the event were fashion and gastronomy industry players from the corporate sector including representatives from Luis Ferraud, Louis Vuitton, Parisian fashion schools and the French Federation of Couturiers and Designers; French Chefs from the Guy Savoy Restaurant, Les Coulisses de Chef and Cordon Bleu cooking schools; French government officials and the media. Officials from Kraftangan, Noor Arfah Batik and several Malaysian fashion designers also attended the event. Guests to the Malaysian Cultural Evening not only had the opportunity to savour Malaysian authentic dishes during the dinner but also saw the appeal of Malaysian batik at a fashion show by Ng Swee Kuang, a Malaysian born designer based in Paris.
4. The full course Malaysian dinner prepared by Perwakilan, the Malaysian Ladies association of the Embassy, under the guidance of Datin Dr Saradha Iyer, wife of the Ambassador, gave the French guests a chance to sample popular Malaysian food such as curry puffs, keropok, satay, nasi lemak, rendang, sambal udang and acar. As for dessert, traditional Malay ?kuihs? like ondeh-ondeh, kuih lapis, kuih bakar and kuih bingka were served in lieu of the French traditional petits fours.
5. Malaysian local fruits were also part of the Malaysian gastronomy displayed and served at the event. Local starfruits, jackfruits, papayas, pineapples, dragonfruits and pomelos were some of the fruits that were flown in from Malaysia especially for the event.
6. The Batik Fashion show presented a mélange of east and west, of traditional and contemporary outfits in batik and ordinary fabrics by Ng Swee Kuang, or fondly known as N.G., who owns a boutique and collection called Ornel? Soie in Paris. The Muar-born designer who started off at the

8. The Malaysian Cultural evening was one of the activities designed for the celebration of Malaysia?s 50 years of independence and the establishment of Malaysia-France diplomatic relations. Besides promoting Malaysian cuisine, the event was also part of the Malaysian Embassy?s effort in taking the opportunity to bring Malaysian batik to Paris, the world?s capital of fashion and haute couture.
