3RD MEETING OF THE ASEAN-UNITED STATES JOINT COOPERATION COMMITTEE (AUJCC) 16 MARCH 2011, ASEAN SECRETARIAT

The 3rd ASEAN-United States Joint Cooperation Committee Meeting (AUJCC) was held on 16 March 2011 at the ASEAN Secretariat. The Meeting was co-chaired by H.E. WilfridoVillacorta, Permanent Representative of the Philippines, and H.E. Joseph Yun, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, U.S. State Department.  Malaysia’s Permanent Representative, Dato’ Hsu King Bee, led the Malaysia Delegation.  She was accompanied by the Deputy Permanent Representative, Ms. ZanariahZainalAbidin.

 

The Meeting discussed the progress in ASEAN-United States relations to date, including developments over the last year; progress in the drafting of the ASEAN-U.S. Plan of Action, 2011-2015 to replace the current one which covered the period 2006-2011. This new POA is scheduled to be adopted by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and U.S. Secretary of State during the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with the U.S. (ASEAN-U.S. PMC) in July this year.  The Meeting also discussed new possible areas of cooperation including energy security, connectivity and disaster relief; progress in the establishment of the ASEAN-U.S. Eminent Persons’ Group and preparations for the ASEAN-US Dialogue and ASEAN-U.S. PMC later this year.

 

ASEAN is appreciative of the United States’ constructive engagement in the region.  Meanwhile, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to a sustained engagement with ASEAN and support for ASEAN community-building efforts and centrality in the evolving regional architecture.
