On 30 March, Dato’ Zahid delivered a lecture entitled, “Navigating and Hedging within a Global Order Based on Power: A Malaysian Perspective” as a guest of the
Università degli Studi di Torino. The lecture was organised by the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society (CPS) in collaboration with the Torino World Affairs Institue (T.wai).
Dato’ Zahid used a practitioner and international relations theory approach to examine the state of the international system, the balance-of-power, and hedging both conceptually and as a strategy of action. He put forth the contention that while the world might seem to be on the cusp of a return to power politics, the international order does not depend on any single or small group of countries and others have agency to shape the trajectory of the system. Malaysia continues to maintain strong and friendly relations with all countries, a commitment to the multilateralism, and an independent, principled and pragmatic foreign policy.
