Amb. Zahid presented his letter of appointment as Permanent Representative to H.E. Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), today, 23 January 2024.
Amb Zahid and Exec-Dir McCain discussed on the UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) which Malaysia hosts in Subang - one of the 5 global HRDs run by the WFP to support the UNs humanitarian response worldwide. Amb. Zahid reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to support the work of the WFP, and the UN as a whole, in responding to humanitarian crises worldwide.
They also discussed the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and the crisis levels of acute food insecurity faced by the population there. Amb. Zahid conveyed Malaysia’s position and concern on the situation in Gaza and underscored the need for a ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian aid. They further discussed Malaysia’s participation in the review process of WFP’s governance, as well as coordination among the UN Rome-based agencies.
