17 May 2023 – H.E. Dato' Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany, Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan, together with other ASEAN Heads of Mission in Tokyo, attended a meeting and reception hosted by the Japan-ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Exchange Group of the House of Councillors, the National Diet of Japan. The event was attended by its Honorary Advisers, Ms. Santo Akiko, and Mr. Yamazaki Masaaki; as well as its President, Mr. Nakasone Hirofumi.
The meeting saw the appointment of Ms. Uno Michiko, as the new Secretary General of the organisation, together with around 80 parliamentarians as the group members. During the meeting, a few issues of mutual interests were discussed, including the preparation for the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation Commemorative Summit that will be held later in December 2023.
The Japan-ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Exchange Group of the House of Councillors was established in 2002 with the objective of promoting further exchange of parliamentarians between the House of Councillors and ASEAN member countries.
