26 January 2025 – The World Collaboration Concert V took place at Kioi Hall, one of Japan’s most prestigious acoustic venues. The event brought together musicians from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Uzbekistan in a remarkable celebration of cultural harmony. Under the leadership of Ms. Kelly Teh, 26 ukulele players from Persatuan Pencinta Muzik Ukulele Malaysia (PPMUM)—ranging in age from 9 to 62—captivated an audience of over 600 attendees with their exceptional performance.
Supported by the Embassy, PPMUM delivered a remarkable performance, showcasing Malaysia’s rich musical heritage through beloved folk songs such as Wau Bulan, Ikan Kekek, and Chan Mali Chan. The highlight of the evening came when Japanese composer Kenji Kanemasu breathed new life into Malaysia’s folk song - Rasa Sayang, blending ukulele, clarinet, and a Japanese traditional music instrument – Koto, to create a mesmerizing fusion that delighted both local and international audiences. In addition, PPMUM conducted a basic ukulele workshop for 20 students from Minato City, fostering further musical exchange.
This unique collaboration not only symbolised the unity and cultural understanding fostered through music but also underscored the importance of preserving and celebrating Malaysia’s folk traditions on a global stage.
