In commemorating the 60th Independence Day of Malaysia, the Embassy of Malaysia in Rabat in collaboration with the Malaysian Student’s Association in Morocco (PMMM) had organised a day-long event at the Embassy on 31 August 2017. It was attended by more than 60 Malaysians residing in Morocco who are mostly students as well as the Embassy's Home-Based staff and their family members.
The day began with the Merdeka speech by His Excellency Dato Jamal Hassan, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Kingdom of Morocco that was followed with the hoisting of Jalur Gemilang and recitation of “Rukunegara” led by the President of the student’s association, Mr. Ahmad Haiqal Fitri Ahmad Fuad.
Counsellor Shahril Nizam Abdul Malek then made a presentation on Malaysia’s journey towards independence by focussing on 10 historical milestones and its significants to the formation of Malaysia. The session had provided the opportunity for the students to also share their views and aspirations on the future of the country despite being far away from home.
After the lunch break, a group of talented students performed a short sketch focussing on the lack of awareness of the younger generation to the history of Malaysia . The sketch was well received by the audience. There was also a poem recitation and multimedia presentation in conjunction with the said celebration.
The Embassy hopes that the event had successfully ignited the spirit of patriotism among the attendees despite being far away from Malaysia. As the saying goes, "You can take a Malaysian out of Malaysia, but you can't take Malaysia out of a Malaysian"
