Travel Advisory

   

Security Advice

 

  • Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw Regions are generally safe.

 

  • Travel to the areas/regions including Sagaing Region, Chin State, Magway Region, Central and Northern Rakhine State, Ayeyarwaddy Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Mon State, Eastern Bago Region, Kayah State, Kayin State as well as Northern Shan State shall only be undertaken with approval from relevant Myanmar authorities.

 

  • Travellers are advised to remain vigilant, prioritise personal safety and situation awareness at all times. It is important for travellers to adhere to the safety advisories of the local authorities.

 

  • Travellers are also advised to always carry with them important identification documents such as passport or ID and save a copy in digital form accessible via handphone or internet when travelling in Myanmar. In some circumstances, the authorities might require the travellers to present these documents for security purposes e.g. at security checkpoints.

 

 

Visa Requirement

 

Effective 1 October 2025, Myanmar has granted visa exemption for Malaysian passport holders. Under this new arrangement, Malaysian travellers can visit Myanmar without a visa for up to 14 days. Travellers may enter and depart through designated international entry and exit points during this period. For travels of more than 14 days and other types of visas, please visit the Ministry of Immigration and Population website (https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/). Please make early preparations for the visa application as the approval process may take some time.

 

 

Public Health Requirements for Travellers entering Myanmar through International Airports and Seaports

 

Travellers must present a printed copy of health insurance to the respective health authorities upon arrival in Myanmar. Travellers may choose to purchase it either from Malaysian insurance providers or from Myanma Insurance (https://www.mminsurance.gov.mm).

 

 

Currency

 

The unit of currency in Myanmar is Kyat. One thousand (1000) Kyat is equivalent to USD 0.21 as of 1 June 2026. Travellers are advised to bring with them a sufficient amount of USD (the physical condition of the notes must be crisp with no marks, stains or folding). USD 100 notes are highly recommended to be exchanged in Myanmar due to the difficulty of withdrawing cash from the local banks.

 

 

Others

 

Malaysians travelling to Myanmar must register their details (i.e. full name, phone number, address in Myanmar, duration of stay in Myanmar, purpose of travel, etc) with the Embassy of Malaysia in Yangon by emailing mwyangon@kln.gov.my or via https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my/login. This should be done ideally before travelling to Myanmar.
