MUSCAT - To commemorate 50 years of independence and to celebrate the country's major milestone of its 'Golden Jubilee,' the Malaysian Embassy hosted its 50th National Day anniversary celebrations at Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa on Saturday. Dato Mohammed Zamri, the Malaysian Ambassador to the Sultanate, stressed the similarities between his country's and Oman's own march to development and prosperity. He also praised the growing bilateral ties between the two countries.
In comments to the Observer, the ambassador exemplified this by noting that currently there are 1,000 Omanis who have taken up studies in Malaysia and that this year, between June and July, 12,000 Omanis visited the country - a rise of some 73 per cent over last year's figures for the same period. Further, 28 Omanis have purchased properties in Malaysia under their "Malaysian Second Home" programme.
Among the Sultanate's small 500-strong expatriate Malaysian community working in various economic sectors, an additional 15 Malaysian university lecturers will be joining them as employees of educational establishments, he said. A Malaysian trade delegation will be visiting the Sultanate in the near future.
