PRESENTATION OF DONATION TO THE TUN SUFFIAN FOUNDATION
H.E. Dato’ Jojie Samuel, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Thailand, received a donation of THB 1 million from BJC Big C Public Company Limited (Thailand) on behalf of Malaysia’s Tun Suffian Foundation (TSF).
The cheque was presented by Madam Khunying Wanna Sirivadhanabhakdi, Vice Chairman of the company in a ceremony held at the Embassy of Malaysia in Bangkok on Wednesday, 21 March 2018.
Also present at the event were Mr Aswin Techajaroenvikul, President and CEO of BJC Big C Public Company Limited, Ambassador Krit Kraijitti, former Thai Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, and senior officials of the Embassy.
The gracious donation from the BJC Big C Public Company Limited arose from the recent visit of YTM Tunku Datuk Dr. Hajjah Sofiah Jewa to Bangkok. YTM Tunku Datuk Dr. Hajjah Sofiah Jewa is a member of Malaysia’s Kedah State royal family who is also the cousin of Malaysia’s 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) and niece of Malaysia’s 1st Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.
She was an invited speaker for the Special Lecture on “Kedah Princes in King Chulalongkorn’s Court: A Story by Daughter/Niece” hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand in Bangkok, Thailand on 22 February 2018. It was held in conjunction with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Thailand.
The contribution to the Tun Suffian Foundation (TSF) derived from YTM Tunku Datuk Dr. Hajjah Sofiah Jewa’s personal request to Tan Sri Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, Chairman of the BJC Big C Public Company Limited over dinner hosted by the latter to provide an avenue for TSF to sell one of its publications entitled ‘Paracosm’ in Thailand.
The book ‘Paracosm’ was written by Ms. Puteri Fateh Arina Merican Megat Suffian Merican, the great-grandniece of Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. This request was kindly supported by Tan Sri Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, in which the proceeds of the sales of the book in Thailand will be channelled to TSF. In supporting the Foundation’s noble cause, Tan Sri Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi generously offered an additional THB 1 million in donation to TSF.
The Tun Suffian Foundation was established in 2002 to perpetuate the good name of the late Tun Mohamed Suffian, the former Lord President of the Federal Court of Malaysia.
He passed away at the age of 83 at the home of his personal close friend, YTM Tunku Datuk Dr. Hajjah Sofiah Jewa in Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya, Selangor State, Malaysia in September 2000.
The Foundation’s main objective is to provide financial assistance (scholarships) to young Malaysians pursuing law studies, as well as young lawyers attending educational seminars and conferences both in Malaysia and abroad.
Among others, the Foundation awards the ‘Tun Suffian Cambridge Scholarship’ periodically for deserving Malaysian students to pursue undergraduate law studies at Tun Mohamed Suffian’s alma mater – the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom (UK), as well as the ‘Tun Suffian Cambridge Award’ to the most outstanding Malaysian student to pursue the Cambridge Master of Law (LLM) Programme.
The Foundation also awards scholarships to Malaysian students to pursue any Malaysian-based Bachelor of Laws (LLB) course recognised by the Malaysian Bar, such as Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA).
