INTERVENTION BY

YBHG. DATO SYED MOHAMAD HASRIN AIDID

PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA

TO THE UNITED NATIONS

ASIA-PACIFIC GROUP (APG) AMBASSADORIAL MEETING

UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE LAO PDR

30 JULY 2021

Thank you, Mr. Chair, for giving me the floor.

Thank you also for all your efforts in handling the matter at hand since yesterday.

We have taken note and understood the position of Fiji. We had also received your Note informing the decision of the Government of Fiji to seek re-election to the HRC at the election to be held in October this year.

At this stage, we were hopeful when we first took the floor yesterday, that at the end of the meeting, the Group would be endorsing our candidature, as we were at a clean slate and within the four month notice before the date of the election as per paragraph 4 of the established guidelines of the Group. As we are aware, the Guidelines were established with the intention of promoting decisions by consensus in a spirit of mutual accommodation, to ensure smooth and streamlined operation of the Group. However, the turn of events has proven that it would not be the case, as we are no longer at a clean slate.

Nonetheless, Malaysia respects the decision of the Government of Fiji on the matter. We wish Fiji and the other candidates namely India, Kazakhstan, Qatar and UAE well and all the best in the election in October this year.

Finally, we count and appreciate the support of members of the APG to Malaysia’s candidature to the HRC for the term 2022-2024.

I thank you. Mr. Chairman.
