SDG 5 (Gender Equality)

Mr. President,

Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. Our commitment to SDG 5 is crucial to ensure that no one is left behind. We recognise the specific challenges we face, such as cultural norms and economic disparities, and are dedicated to overcoming these obstacles.

2. Malaysia is also cognisant of its international obligations as a State Party to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), to which Malaysia acceded on 5 July 1995.

3. Federal Constitution of Malaysia upholds the principle of non-discrimination against women. Article 8(1) ensures equal treatment for all, while Article 8(2) specifically prohibits gender-based discrimination. This strong legal foundation supports our ongoing efforts to eliminate gender inequality and promote equal rights for women.

4. Malaysia’s Gender Gap Index (MGGI) has shown promising progress, standing at 0.705 in 2023. It shows Malaysia has achieved educational parity with equal or higher enrolment of girls at the pre-primary and secondary levels, gives us optimism about the future of gender equality in Malaysia.

5. Women’s labour force participation (LFPR) saw a significant rise from 55.6% in 2022 to 56.2% in 2023. Under the MADANI Economy Framework, Malaysia is committed to further increasing this figure to 60% by 2033 through targeted measures to empower women and promote gender equality across all sectors.

6. Furthermore, Malaysia has institutionalised gender mainstreaming through the empowerment of women, guided by the National Women’s Policy 2025–2030 and its associated action plans. This policy comprises four key focus areas and aligns with the National Development Plan.

7. In conclusion, Malaysia remains fully committed to achieving SDG 5 and promoting sustainable, inclusive development. We believe that using science-based and inclusive policies will accelerate the progress. With clear and focused actions, we hope to show our strong commitment and build trust in our efforts.
