AT THE INFORMAL CONSULTATIONS ON THE DECLARATION FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED NATIONS

Thank you, Madame Co-Facilitators, and congratulations on your appointment to this important portfolio. Please be assured of Malaysia’s support on your leadership throughout this vital process.
2. My intervention will be very brief, mostly on the technical aspect of the political declaration.
3. First, Malaysia fully supports the proposal made by many member states today, particularly Singapore, on the notion to have a short, concise and pragmatic political declaration. In this regard, my delegation would like to stress the importance for all member states to be realistic and to capture only broad elements in the declaration. When we negotiate the text, it is important to always bear in mind that the draft declaration is mandated to be adopted by consensus, during the high-level week and with the presence of our leaders. Hence, it is pivotal to strive for a balanced and acceptable declaration by all member states.
4. Second, Malaysia would like to see a political declaration that can be easily understood by people from all walks of life. In this regard, my delegation would like to suggest for introductory paragraphs that reaffirm the UN Charter, rule of law and the relevant resolutions, followed by reasonable numbers of operative paragraphs. The operative paragraphs may incorporate the forward looking elements, perhaps around our collective vision and commitment to the three pillars of the Secretary-General’s UN reform, namely development, management, and peace and security.
5. And finally, Malaysia looks forward to engaging constructively with you, Madame Co-Facilitators, as well as other stakeholders on this matter.
