STATEMENT BY
H.E. SYED MOHAMAD HASRIN AIDID
PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA
TO THE UNITED NATIONS
AT THE EXTRAORDINARY VIRTUAL MINISTERIAL PLEDGING CONFERENCE OF THE UNITED NATIONS RELIEF AND WORKS AGENCY FOR PALESTINE REFUGEES IN THE NEAR EAST (UNRWA)
23 JUNE 2020, NEW YORK
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Government of Malaysia, allow me to begin by commending Jordan and Sweden for convening this very important Conference.
2. Malaysia has been a firm supporter to the Palestinian cause. Over the years, Malaysia has provided assistance to the Government and the people of Palestine, both in cash and in kind, particularly for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Palestinian societies. To assist Palestinians in their efforts to prepare and respond in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, Malaysia contributed 1 million facemasks, 500 face shields and 500,000 rubber hand gloves to the Palestinian Government.
3. With regard to UNRWA, Malaysia continues to believe in the critical role being played by the agency in providing assistance, protection and advocacy to over 5 million Palestinian refugees in the field. Indeed, upholding UNRWA’s mandate is our shared responsibility. In this regard, we are pleased to announce today our contribution of USD 120,000 for the year 2020, in support of UNRWA’s work and operations. Malaysia remains committed to working closely with UNRWA and relevant parties to alleviate the sufferings of the Palestinian refugees.
Thank you.
