Air Asia Flies to Tianjin

Low-cost carrier Air Asia made its maiden flight to Tianjin on 2 April 2009.  The Kuala Lumpur-Tianjin flight took off at 8.30 am and touched down at the Tianjin Binhai International Airport at 2.35 pm.  To mark the event, H.E. Dato’ Syed Norulzaman, Ambassador of Malaysia to China officiated the ceremony, together with the Chief of Tianjin Tourism Bureau Mr She Qingwen.  Also at the ceremony was Dato’ Sri Tony Fernandes, Group CEO, Air Asia Berhad and staff of Air Asia, as well as officials from the Embassy.

Located in northeast China, Tianjin is China's sixth largest city.  The five-weekly service to Tianjin from Kuala Lumpur will be operated by Air Asia X, the airline’s long haul affiliate. Tianjin is the seventh route into China.  Currently, Air Asia's other routes to China include Macau, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Guilin and Haikou.  According to Dato’ Sri Tony Fernandes, the airline will have 10 destinations to China for 2009, attracting over two million passengers from China, Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
