On 17 November 2015, Mr. Muzambli Markam, the Consul General of Malaysia in Guangzhou participated in a familiarisation visit to key ports in Guangdong organized by the Guangdong Provincial Transportation Department. The 3-day visit programme was aimed at introducing and to promote its port infrastructure and facilities to countries situated along the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” initiative first mooted by by President Xi Jinping. Officials from the Consulate General of Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam also took part in the visit.
Among the key ports visited included the Nansha port in Guangzhou, Yantian Port and Shekou ports both in Shenzhen and finally the delegation visited the Gaolan port in Zhuhai. A comprehensive briefing on the facilities and current development at all the ports was given by the relevant port authorities. The visit allowed the participants to physically inspect the port facilities and have a better understanding of the capacity and nature of the port operations in Guangdong.
Among the Guangdong officials and authorities met during the visit included Mr. Liu Xiaohua, Deputy Director General of the Guangdong Provincial Transportation Department (GPTD), Mr. Chen Renfu, Vice Mayor of Zhuhai, Mr. Li, Director of Port Management Division GPTD, Ms. Chen Huizhen, Deputy Director of Port Management Division GPTD and the relevant officials from the respective ports.
The visit was the first such event organized by the Guangdong Government for the Consuls General in Guangdong province. Following the many positive feedback from the participants, GPTD has agreed to arrange other such familiarisation programme for the Consulates General, particularly to visit two other key ports in Guangdong province i.e. Zhanjiang and Huizhou.
