Malaysia has always been a consistent participant of the Canton Fair and has been participating in the International Pavilion since its inception in 2008. Malaysia’s participation in the fair has grown from one promotional booth led by the Trade Section of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Guangzhou in 2008 to over 35 companies each year with 39 companies taking up 46 booths this year.

Malaysian exhibitors have made the right choice to participate in the fair as a platform for promoting Malaysian products, not only into China but also to foreign buyers. The Canton Fair held annually in Guangzhou, Guangdong’s capital have a long historical tradition and has in a way contributed to the momentum of growth between Malaysia and China especially in Guangdong.

Bilateral trade relations had accelerated overwhelmingly making Malaysia as China’s top ten trading partner and the number one partner among ASEAN Countries. In 2012, total bilateral trade reached USD 94.77 billion up 17.6 % compared to 2011. Of this amount, USD 58.25 billion makes up the total export to China and USD 36.53 billion total imports from China. Of the total bilateral trade, USD 30 billion came from Guangdong. As such, Guangdong played an important role in enhancing further the trade interaction between Malaysia and China. It is undeniable that transactions made at the Canton Fair also contributed towards the positive trade statistics.

The Consul General of Malaysia, Mr. Francisco Munis in his launching speech also stressed on the importance of uplifting Malaysia’s image as a trustworthy trading nation and urged Malaysian exhibitors to support the effort by building their image as reputable Malaysian traders.
