The Consulate General of Malaysia in Guangzhou hosted a reception on the 16 September 2011 to commemorate the Celebration of Merdeka and Malaysia Day at the Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou. Over 300 Malaysians from all backgrounds attended the event. In addition, the reception was also attended by local officials, business people and friends of Malaysia.

During the reception, the PERWAKILAN (Ladies Association of the Consulate General) also presented a group presentation with two songs entitled “Tanggal 31” and “Selamat Hari Raya”. All guests were also treated to a “Joget” dance by a group of Malaysians performers. As part of its public diplomacy effort, the Consulate General in collaboration with Guangzhou TV, also covered the event and held interviews with Malaysians on the culture of Malaysia for broadcast in Guangzhou TV Channel.

In his address, the Consul General of Malaysia in Guangzhou, Mr. Francisco Munis stressed on the importance for all Malaysians residing in Guangdong to reflect on the significance and meaning of Merdeka and Malaysia Day. In line with the theme for 2011 Merdeka Day, 1 Malaysia: Transformasi Berjaya, Rakyat Sejahtera, the Consul General also urged Malaysians to support the Government’s transformation effort as well as to help maintain the good image of Malaysia in Guangdong at all time.

The event was a huge success as Malaysians from all walks of life regardless of their backgrounds rallied together with their families to support the event by attending the reception.
