On 28 April 2026, H.E. Nor' Azam Mohd Idrus, High Commissioner of Malaysia (“TYT”), engaged with Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr. Raijeli Taga, and Mr. Sevuloni Valenitabua, Chairperson of Fiji's Constitution Review Commission (CRC). The engagement reflected TYT's ongoing interest in maintaining open diplomatic dialogue with Fiji on matters of mutual importance. TYT and members of the diplomatic corps were briefed that Fiji's nationwide constitutional consultations will run from 4 May 2026 for two months, following preliminary engagements since 7 April 2026. A total of 104 consultation locations across Fiji, including outer islands, have been identified. The CRC was established under Fiji's Commission of Inquiry Act 1946. Public awareness activities (PACE) began on 20 April 2026. The CRC is expected to submit a report in due course, after which the process may proceed in accordance with Fiji's domestic legal framework. TYT reaffirmed Malaysia's respect for Fiji's right to determine its own future. TYT noted that bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and Fiji — including in areas such as technical assistance, capacity-building, and people-to-people exchanges — benefits from continued constructive dialogue. Malaysia values its long-standing relationship with Fiji and remains committed to friendly engagement rooted in mutual respect. This engagement is part of ongoing efforts to better understand Fiji's priorities. Malaysia stands ready to continue cooperation in all areas of shared interest. Further reinforced through engagements such as this is Malaysia's credibility as a reliable and respectful partner in the Pacific.
