The World Migratory Birds Day 2024 was celebrated at the Nasese mudflats on 2 November 2024. The event highlighted the mudflats’ vital role as one of the essential feeding grounds for migratory birds, particularly the Wandering Tattler. In his speech, H.E. Nor' Azam Mohd Idrus, High Commissioner of Malaysia (“TYT”), extended his best wishes to BirdLife International and NatureFiji-MareqetiViti in their efforts to secure recognition of the Nasese mudflats as a Key Biodiversity Area. Remarkably, the highest concentration of Wandering Tattlers per unit area is found at the Nasese mudflats. The event attracted a diverse group, including children, scientists, environmental advocates, local communities, media representatives, academics, and civil society organisations. Ms. Fareea Ma of BirdLife International and TYT reflected on the value of this event and the causes it champions. The event featured bird counting, a discovery walk at the Nasese foreshore mudflats to record the different types of animals and plants living there, and a taste of Malaysian cuisine. TYT also emphasized in his speech that this event is one of the High Commission's contributions under Program Sinergi Rakyat Malaysia (PSRM)/ Malaysian Synergy Program. Through PSRM, the High Commission partners with Malaysians abroad who lead impactful programs. In line with the objectives of the PSRM, TYT hoped the event would strengthen bonds among Malaysians abroad, foster positive impacts in Fiji, and reinforce the international image of Malaysia.
