Association of Malaysia in Italy's First Formal Event of 2009

In conjunction with the Chinese New Year, the Association of Malaysians in Italy (AMI) had its first formal event on 31 January 2009. A dinner was held at Gran Drago Restaurant in Rome to usher in the Year of the Ox. Forty five guests comprising Malaysians residing in Italy with their families and friends turned up for the event. The scrumptious nine-course dinner, the chatter in Malaysian accent set the cordial ambience of the evening. The dinner provided a golden opportunity to bringing together Malaysians who have been residing in Italy from as latest as two weeks time to as much as 30 years. Representing His Excellency Ambassador of Malaysia to Italy at the dinner was Encik Mohammad Azhar Mazlan, Counsellor of the Embassy together with his family members.

2.             Whilst there have been Malaysians residing in various parts of Italy for many years, it was not until December 2008 did the development of a formal association begin. A committee was formed in January 2009 and memberships have been extended to Malaysians and non-Malaysians residing in Italy. To date AMI has a total of 23 registered members. The main aim of AMI is to promote Malaysia in Italy and vice verse, act as a focal point for Malaysian citizens in Italy, and to increase cross-cultural interaction through charitable and community events.

3.             AMI would especially like to thank the Ambassador of Malaysia to Italy and Encik Mohammad Azhar for their support and assistance as an information source. Our thanks go to the Gran Drago restaurant for sponsoring the drinks during the dinner and for registering as a member of AMI as well as to everyone who had graciously assisted with the preparations of the event and to those present making the event one of friendship and goodwill.
