After a lapse of five years, the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo revived the tradition of the Merdeka Golf Tournament on Sunday, 8 August 2010 as part of the celebrations of the upcoming 53rd anniversary of the Independence of Malaysia.
Held at a prestigious golf club near Tokyo, the tournament saw the participation of about 30 golfers from the Embassy, Malaysian agencies and corporate bodies based in Tokyo, Osaka and Yokohama as well as special guests from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Imperial Household, members of the Diplomatic Corps and a few Friends of Malaysia.
A fond golfer himself, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan, HE Datuk Shaharuddin Md Som won the challenge trophy. In the special guest category, Mr. Hiroshi Inomata, Director General for Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan came out victorious.
The Merdeka Golf Tournament was not just a good avenue for the players to sharpen their golfing skill but also provide the opportunity for them, in a more casual way, to further cement the ties of friendship that have been established for years since our Independence.
