The Ministry of External Relations of Peru organised the ASEAN@50 Celebration in Peru on 11 August 2017 at Inca Garcilaso Cultural Centre, Ministry of External Relations (MFA) to commemorate the ASEAN Day. It was the first time MFA Peru is hosting for ASEAN which reflects Peru’s growing interest towards engaging ASEAN more meaningfully.
The golden jubilee celebration was officiated by His Excellency Nestor Popolizio Bardales, Vice Minister of the Ministry of External Relations of Peru. His Excellency Chuah Teong Ban, Ambassador of Malaysia to Peru, as chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Lima, delivered a keynote remark. It was attended by more than 60 senior officials of the MFA, Diplomatic Corps, academicians, think tank institutions, journalist and the ASEAN community in Lima.
In his opening remarks, the Vice Minister acknowledged the importance of ASEAN as a regional cooperation and informed Peru’s request to accede to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC). The Ambassador of Malaysia highlighted ASEAN’s major achievements in the last five decades and also ways Peru can strengthen engagement with ASEAN. Both agreed that closer cooperation could be forged through the Pacific Alliance where ministerial meetings were held at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly every year.
The event also showcased an ASEAN video, traditional dances, display of costumes and traditional finger food of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
