Gong Xi Fa Cai!! Chinese Lunar New Year is here again. There is a cause for celebration.
Ambassador Chuah Teong Ban hosted a Chinese New Year open house at his residence over the weekend to usher the Year of Rooster. The Malaysian diaspora in Peru and Friends of Malaysia were invited to taste the diversity of Malaysia.
Ambassador Chuah specially prepared a common Chinese Malaysian dish of Yee Sang, usually served during this auspicious festival, to his guests. He introduced the ceremony of tossing (loh sang) this salad dish with raw fish slices and explained about the significance of this unique act of tossing the salad with chopsticks all crowding around a round table. The higher the toss would signify better returns for the year ahead and also greater prosperity to each guest.
Being a multiracial society, rendang, nasi minyak, taufu sumbat and roasted lamb were also served to represent the cultures of other ethnic communities in Malaysia.
The Friends of Malaysia in Peru expressed gratitude for being given the opportunity to partake the taste and ceremonious tossing which were deemed unique Malaysian cuisines and cultural habits that they have not come across.
